Phoenix Children's unveils $588 million multi-year expansion plans
Phoenix Children's Hospital is embarking on a multi-year expansion of its main campus. The vision for the new Hospital is to enhance clinical programs and increase overall capacity in our unique, kid-friendly environment of family-centered care.
Answering the need
Phoenix Children's Hospital is at a critical juncture. Explosive population growth, combined with a projected shortage of pediatric hospital beds, is placing greater demands on the Hospital than ever before.
By 2030, the number of children in metro Phoenix is projected to increase to more than 1.5 million, compared to 900,000 today. The Valley does not have enough hospital beds to serve this escalating population of children.
The Hospital's response to this explosive population growth is a multi-phase expansion that will enable the Hospital to provide world-class care to the sickest kids in our community today and well into the future.
Expansion details
In 2008, Phoenix Children's Hospital broke ground on a $588 million expansion that will transform us from the hospital we are today, to a world-class pediatric medical campus that will set a new standard in children's healthcare.
Phase I improvements, slated for completion by 2012, include:
- An 11-story patient tower, the center point of the new Phoenix Children's Hospital. High-volume public spaces – like admitting, the cafeteria and retail pharmacy – will be located on the ground floor, with upper floors devoted to our Centers of Excellence, other clinical programs and private patient rooms.
- A 18-unit Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at our hospital.
- A highly-visible main entry boulevard off Thomas Road.

- A Level One Pediatric Trauma Center - the highest designation a hospital can receive – will make Phoenix Children's home to the only such pediatric center in the state, where the most severely injured children will receive comprehensive treatment.
- Two parking garages for patients, families, visitors and medical staff, with each access to our patient tower.
- Beautifully landscaped grounds will include three gardens and a large covered playground for our patients and their siblings, where they can spend time away from their Hospital room.
- 750-car employee-only parking garage.

Growing with the community
Nearly 25 years ago, this community recognized the need for a hospital to serve the special needs of children. Bold leaders from healthcare, business and the giving community answered the call and established Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Since that time, Phoenix Children's has become one of the premier children's hospitals in the nation, providing world-class care in more than 40 pediatric specialties to our state's sickest kids and taking the lead on issues that impact children's health and safety.
In 25 short years we've grown from an idea, to become one of the 10 largest children's hospitals in the nation. And we're still growing.
