Governor Napolitano visits Phoenix Children's Hospital school patients

 

Students of Phoenix Children's 1 Darn Cool School had an exciting visit from the Governor on Thursday, July 24.

 

Napolitano explained to the young students that a governor is like the president of a state. Then, she asked the 20 children who attended her history lesson if they knew who was running for president. One child shouted out what sounded like "Obama" and another pre-teen energetically said "McCain, McCain!"

 

The students had the chance of a lifetime to ask the Governor any question they wanted. The kids asked questions such as:

• Are you rich?
• Do you have your own plane?

 

Each student who attended the storytelling session received a commemorative Arizona quarter and a book signed by the Governor.

 

The Governor's visit was very special to the students of 1 Darn Cool School, who cannot leave the hospital due to their medical conditions.  

 

When children continue their schooling while in the hospital, their anxiety levels are lowered, and they feel better, physically and mentally. A healthy mind leads to a healthy body. 

 

1 Darn Cool School teaches grades K through 12 and helps hospitalized children keep up with their class work. 

 

Throughout the years, the program has been especially important to middle and high school students who are able to keep up with their school work during hospitalizations and continue earning credits towards graduation. Additionally, teachers provide bedside instruction for children who are unable to come to the classroom.
