Keeping our patients safe during respiratory virus season

Most children who are in the Hospital don't have respiratory viruses. They have other medical problems. We don't want them to get respiratory viruses, too. Respiratory viruses can be a real problem for children who are sick or who were born too early.

To help protect our patients, all visitors on both the Thomas campus and McDowell campus must be at least 12 years old and in good health.  These visitor restrictions will be in effect until the end of respiratory virus season, which is generally in the spring.

Phoenix Children's, along with most other area hospitals, are instituting restrictions at this time due to the increased level of respiratory viruses being seen in the community.  According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, as of Dec. 1, 2008, 26 lab-confirmed RSV cases were reported. We will continue to monitor conditions and discontinue restrictions when overall numbers have decreased.

Phoenix Children's protective measures:

  • Children less than 12 years old will not be permitted past the front lobby of the Hospital and cannot be unattended in that area.
  • Screening of all visitors will occur at the front lobby and emergency room entrances.
  • Signs will be posted at all hospital entrances for visitor information.
  • Educational handouts for families and visitors will be available in the main lobby, emergency department and patient care areas. This information is also available to download below.

Anyone can pass on a respiratory virus.

Here are preventive measures you can take:

  • get a flu shot
  • wash your hands with soap frequently
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • use antibacterial hand gel

If you feel ill, use these tips on containing a virus:

  • stay at home when you are sick
  • cover sneezes
  • throw out used tissues
